LUMECCA IPL

Lumecca IPL

Intense Pulse Lights

An even skin tone is one of the surest signs of healthy and youthful skin. With aging, hypo- and hyperpigmentation become a concern for patients. Energy-based treatments, such as Lumecca, are the most effective means of restoring an even skin tone.

Lumecca is a very powerful intense pulsed light (IPL) that treats pigmented and vascular lesions. After just one use, you will notice a significant improvement in the complexion and clarity of your skin. Lumecca operates using photothermolysis, which delivers a comfortable and effective light treatment.

Benefits of Lumecca

• Treats age spots
• Reduces vascular lesions such as spider veins
• Rosacea
• Freckle reduction
• Repairs Sun damage

Redness and a slight warming of the skin are normal after treatment and usually subside within an hour. Over the next one to two days, you may notice a darkening of pigmented spots. In the weeks following, the pigmented lesions will clear, leading to an evening out of the skin tone. After treating vascular lesions, you may see the vein blanch or a color change in the vessel, which will dissipate after a few days.

An improved skin appearance can be noted after the first session. Multiple sessions provide even better results. Individual results may vary, and contraindications may apply. Must be performed by an experienced, licensed professional.

Is everyone a candidate for Lumecca IPL?

No, IPL can not be used on tan or darkly pigmented skin. You will want to avoid excessive sun exposure that is why fall and winter months are usually the best times to seek treatment. It also can not be used on Melasma as it could make it worse. However, there are other treatments for Melasma.

If you are unsure if you are a good candidate, we would gladly invite you to come in for a consultation. If Lumecca IPL is not the right fit for your skin type or goals, we will provide you recommendations on what will work best for you.

Is it Safe?

Lumecca is a very safe and effective treatment for its desired outcomes when performed by a trained and qualified practitioner. We will always start your treatment with a consultation to make sure Lumecca IPL is the best treatment modality for you.

How long does a treatment take?

IPL usually takes about 30-45 minutes depending on what areas are being treated.

How often does IPL need to be performed?

Lumecca IPL results are best in a series of 2-5 treatments performed every 3-4 weeks. Pigmented lesions usually require less sessions than vascular lesions. Unfortunately, since our skin is constantly aging and being exposed to UV rays, the results wont last forever. After your initial treatment sessions, you may find you need to return annually for maintenance depending on how quickly pigmented lesions return. The key to elongating your results is to be sure to apply SPF everyday, even during winter months and while inside, and limit your sun exposure.

What do I need to do to prepare for IPL treatment?

The most important thing you need to do is to avoid the sun. This includes tanning beds and/or self-tanners 2 weeks prior. Be diligent about wearing SPF 30+ whenever outdoors at least 2 weeks prior to treatment. If you have been prescribed and instructed to use Hydroquinone, do so for 2 weeks prior to the procedure. Avoid use of photosensitizing medications (antibiotics) if able, and medications such as Retin-A or Glycolic Acid 1 week before treatment. Please notify us if you have a history of cold sores. You may need a Rx of Valacyclovir called to your pharmacy to start before treatment. Arrive to your appointment with thoroughly cleansed skin. Please avoid applying lotion, sunscreen, makeup, perfume, powder, or oil on the skin. For male patients please shave any hair in treatment area(s).

Let us know of any recent medication changes or sun exposure. Recent use of antibiotics may result in a delay in treatment as they make the skin more sensitive to light. Avoid smoking cigarettes; this may constrict vessels and make treatment less successful. Do not exercise or go to the gym, spa or sauna immediately prior to treatment.

What should I expect at my appointment and does it hurt?

Your provider will start by assessing your skin type to determine the proper settings. Then the area(s) being treated will be cleansed and gel will be applied. We will give you some goggles to protect your eyes during the treatment. There will be a bright flash of light from the Lumecca that some people describe as feeling like a slight snap with a rubber band. Concerned about the pain?? Just like you, the experience of discomfort is unique and varies from person to person. We do our best to make you as comfortable as possible during the treatment. From our experience, most people find it very manageable. However, we can use topical numbing if needed to provide additional comfort.

Aside from a bit of redness and possibly some tenderness and maybe slight swelling, within 24 hours most would never know you were in for a treatment.

What should I expect following my IPL treatment?

It is very important to continue to avoid sun exposure and apply SPF 30+ whenever outdoors for at least 3 weeks after. Moisturizer and make-up may be applied immediately after treatment. Please know that treated pigment may become darker following IPL, this is a desired effect and may be covered by make-up. The treated pigment will slough off as the skin renews. Do not scratch/pick at the area. You will want to avoid saunas, strenuous exercise, and any activity that may cause excessive heat for 24 hours. You may notice your skin feeling itchy, this is normal. Do not scrub or scratch. Avoid use of peels or aggressive cleansers for 2 weeks. Inform us immediately if there is continued or severe discomfort or any sign of blistering. This is extremely uncommon, but requires immediate attention.

How much does Lumecca IPL cost?

The cost of IPL varies depending on the area(s) treated and how many sessions are required to see desired results. See below for more information, or please call or email us with your inquiry and we will be better able to assist you.
